Intraspecific variation in multiple trait responses of Alexandrium ostenfeldii towards elevated pCO2

چکیده
Dissolved oceanic CO2 concentrations are rising as result of increasing atmospheric partial pressure (pCO2), which has large consequences for phytoplankton. To test how higher availability affects different traits the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii, we exposed three strains same population to 400 and 1,000 µatm CO2, measured including growth rate, cell volume, elemental composition, 13C fractionation, toxin content, volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Strains largely increased their rates particulate carbon nitrogen production with pCO2 showed significant changes in VOC profile. One strain a decrease both PSP cyclic imine content thereby cellular toxicity. Fractionation against response elevated pCO2, may point towards enhanced acquisition and/or downscaling concentrating mechanisms. Besides consistent responses some traits, other variation direction strength pCO2. The observed intraspecific phenotypic plasticity important functional within help A. ostenfeldii negate effects immediate environmental fluctuations allow populations adapt more quickly changing environments.

متن کاملWhy intraspecific trait variation matters in community ecology.
Natural populations consist of phenotypically diverse individuals that exhibit variation in their demographic parameters and intra- and inter-specific interactions. Recent experimental work indicates that such variation can have significant ecological effects. However, ecological models typically disregard this variation and focus instead on trait means and total population density. Under what ...
متن کاملIntraspecific functional trait variation and performance of Populous tremuloides
The fact that plant-trait and functionaltrait syndromes can describe plant growth strategies, and as a result their ecological requirements, has gained considerable importance in ecology (Grime et al., 1997; Westoby et al., 2002). At the global scale, the existence of a major axis of specialization among plants has been determined by measuring leaf functional traits; this axis highlights a fund...
متن کاملWhen does intraspecific trait variation contribute to functional betadiversity?
1. Intraspecific trait variation (ITV) is hypothesized to play an important role in community assembly and the maintenance of biodiversity. However, fundamental gaps remain in our understanding of how ITV contributes to mechanisms that create spatial variation in the functional-trait composition of communities (functional b-diversity). Importantly, ITV may influence the perceived importance of ...
متن کاملPhysiological responses of Manila clams Venerupis (=Ruditapes) philippinarum with varying parasite Perkinsus olseni burden to toxic algal Alexandrium ostenfeldii exposure.
Manila clam stock from Arcachon Bay, France, is declining, as is commercial harvest. To understand the role of environmental biotic interactions in this decrease, effects of a toxic dinoflagellate, Alexandrium ostenfeldii, which blooms regularly in Arcachon bay, and the interaction with perkinsosis on clam physiology were investigated. Manila clams from Arcachon Bay, with variable natural level...
